With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility

Management Leadership Philosophy

“When the best leader’s work is done the people say: We did it ourselves.”- Lao Tzu

This past semester in Management Leadership has shaped my leadership philosophy significantly. The central idea that stuck out to me from this learning process was that you cannot understand others until you truly understand yourself. Having a clear understanding of yourself ,as well as what kind of leader you are, is the best way to place yourself and your fellow peers in a reliable and communicative environment. I broke my leadership philosophy into three core components: passion, devotion, and growth.

Passion:

"Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you." -Oprah Winfrey

Passion is something that drives you. It is a mission, a goal, and something that you care deeply about. Having passion is an essential part in becoming a successful leader, moreover, a successful person. A passionate leader is the person starting the fire, eventually spreading to any and every follower. The leader is the motivational center for the work environment. They are present to help their followers thrive through difficult situations and circumstances. All successful leaders had a goal envisioned and let their passions drive them to their destinations.

Devotion:

"He who is not a good servant will not be a good master." -Plato

Leadership is an act of service. A leader must be fully devoted to his/her followers in order to gain the respect needed to guide them. Leaders must consider themselves equal to those who work under them, neglecting egotistical goals and working towards the betterment of others. A staunch leader will commit them-self to the purpose or cause and aid others in the process.
"A man is called selfish not for pursuing his own good, but for neglecting his neighbor's."
- Richard Whately

Growth:

"Strength and growth come only through continuous effort and struggle" - Napoleon Hill

A leader is someone who takes risks and is willing to accept failure. Learning from mistakes helps the whole management staff grow collectively. A good leader is one that will adapt quickly, as the world is changing each and every second. Being a leader means that you can't stop being persistent. Persistence allows you to recover from your failures and helps you find a method that will work. A leader isn't afraid to fall sometimes because they know they'll eventually get up.
