Leadership project: Sac Rager

6/7 SAC RAGER
APRIL 26TH DURING ALL LUNCHES
Annie, Alex, Lisa, Mark

ALL MONEY WILL BE DONATED TO:
TO WRITE LOVE ON HER ARMS

Our big idea for our Leadership Impact Project is to raise funds for our charity by holding a dance party in the SAC for students and faculty.

Our challenge is to get students involved in the dance party and get them to donate money to our great cause.

In the SAC we will have DJs such as N!ko, Neeral, and Casey Jones to play some sweet jams to get the students excited to participate in dancing and donating.

We will be turning the music down or off every 2-3 minutes, in order for the music to come back on, five volunteers have to donate one dollar to the cause.  In addition to this, students and teachers will be able to “vote” for the best DJ by putting money into jars. The DJ with the most “votes” (most amount of money) will be declared as the winner.

Our leadership project will benefit both the GBN community and the non-profit organization, To Write Love On Her Arms.  It will bring the Spartan society together for a fantastic cause.
To reach success, we will raise $100.  We will have an awesome turnout of students, that are willing to donate money and are excited abut the cause and the event.

We will hold our “rager” April 26, in the
sac during all lunch MODS.
We will ask local DJ’s to perform for free.
We will spread word of the fundraiser through advertisements and announcements to maximize student participation and awareness.
In addition to the music, we will have a bake sale to raise money.

Sporting Equipment Drive!

Being able to play sports and be a part of team means so much more than just being able to play. Sports are where leaders are formed and lifelong friendships are made. It is in sports that many learn the lessons of hard work, team work, and how to deal with adversity. This is why we chose to start a used sporting equipment drive at GBN. We hope that through this drive we can provide the great opportunity of athletics to kids that otherwise wouldn't have it.

Challenge: Our challenge is to help an organization help kids enjoy athletics through means of donation.
Solution:
We will hold a used sporting equipment drive at GBN, with the donations going to the Village of Northbrook during Earth Day on April 20th who will then donate it to a charity.
·      From April 15-19
·      Donation boxes will be at the athletics, science, and cafeteria entrances.
o   This way we encouraged students to bring used equipment because they know that they won’t have to carry it around all day.
·      We ran an announcement promoting the drive the week before and the week of the drive.
We will also be promoting the drive through our personal social media accounts.
·      We also posted signs throughout GBN promoting the cause.
·      Emails were sent to athletic coaches in hopes of spreading the word and possibly receiving their old equipment.
·      Throughout the process we have been in contact with the Village of Northbrook who does an Earth Day collection, which includes sporting equipment. We decided to form a partnership of sorts. All of the equipment that we collect we will then give to them who in turn will donate all their donations to the Salvation Army.

Benefits:
·      We hope that by donating this equipment that we can either help raise money for a good cause or that the equipment directly goes to helping underprivileged kids enjoy sports.
Success:
·      We hope to collect more than 5 boxes full of sporting equipment, which we think will make a considerable difference in the community.
Timeline:
3/21- Find out what paperwork, if any, needs to be filled out in order to use the donation boxes.
            4/9- Create morning announcement.
4/10- Create sign to post in school.
4/11- Email head coaches and parents to spread awareness.
4/12- Distribute signs and create donation boxes.
            4/15-4/19- The drive happens!
4/20- Drop off donations at the Village of Northbrook’s Earth day collection.

Fight on Spartans! Crush the Cancer!

Baggo to Beat Cancer

The Spartan Stance: We Spartans are a proud people. We don't just stay strong in the Spartan spirit through our personal strengths and personal feats. We enjoy helping others. When we help others, especially those in our community, we are not only building upon our spirit, but also theirs. That is why for our Leadership Impact Project we have decided to help the strongest Spartans we can find. We have decided to help cancer patients over at the Glenbrook Hospital's Kellogg Cancer Center.

Our Goal: Brandon, Dylan and I (Adam) came up with the idea of finding out what these fighters, both young and old, need. We developed a plan together. We called up the Kellog Cancer Center (KCC) and spoke with the head nurse of the KCC, Ann Gannon. She was very kind and returned our call quickly. We gathered a rather short list of items, but a goal is a goal. We are aiming to raise $300 to buy 2 umbrellas with concrete bases for the garden at the KCC. The patients want to be outside, but the skin during their treatments is very delicate. This way, they can enjoy the outdoors a bit more, have a change of scenery from the hospital bed.

The Master Plan: $300 doesn't just magically appear. If it did, we wouldn't have ourselves such a project, now would we? We have a plan. We are going to host a Baggo Tournament. We intend to charge a fee of $2 per person. Then, we will have students register ahead of time. We have already spoken with Dr. Tarjan about our dates and have landed ourselves two A days and multiple time slots. We will be hosting the first day of the tournament on April 30, 2013. The second day, May 5, 2013 will be used as needed as either a rain date, or an extra day for games, dependent on how many games are completed on Day 1. Time slots for students to choose from are: 2/3, Lunch 1 and Lunch 3, and 8/9. The tournament will be held in the courtyard by the cafeteria. Students will be able to register the week of April 22.

Spread the Word: We are making posters to advertise. Students can expect to see a Facebook Page and Event page. We will have the posters up as soon as we can. We are also preparing announcements to be approved and to be made in the mornings leading up to the event. Students should tell their friends and spread the word by the best way people can, by mouth.

The Final Phase:The final step in our master plan is to purchase the umbrellas and then go with the movers to bring them to the garden. We cannot wait to see the look on Ann's face when she gets the umbrellas, and we cannot wait to see the patients enjoy the outdoors again. We have set this goal for ourselves to pave the way for students, Spartans, and patients for generations to come. Stay Strong Spartans!!!

Leadership Impact Project: Concussion Awareness Project

Leadership Impact Project: Concussion Awareness Project

When the Leadership Impact Project was first introduced to the class, it seemed a bit daunting. A long-term project with broad parameters that expected us to actively improve our community left so many open ends for individuals and project groups to tie up. However, as soon as my group and I decided upon the cause that we wished to pursue, we were able to made headway in determining what our mission was for our project, what our goals are, and how we aimed to achieve those goals.

Recent happenings in the national and local arenas with regards to the tragic and life-threatening effects of concussions inspired us to pursue the cause of concussion awareness.

Impact Project Statement/Goal Raise awareness about concussions and the effects of concussions in our GBN community.

Through inspiring our peers to take ownership of their health and well-being, we aim to empower our friends and help them protect themselves both with regards to athletic activities and everyday life. By educating others about the risks, signs, and effects of concussions, we hope that students will be more apt to protect themselves and demand change with regards to sports and activities that currently put their health at risk.

The Original Plan:
At first, we hoped to schedule a guest speaker knowledgeable about the risks and effects of concussions to speak to the GBN community about any information that students and parents should know to better help protect themselves or their loved ones

The Problem:
Although we were passionate about this plan and had already researched local experts who could present to the community, we began to realize that this idea would be a little too risky for us to undertake. We came to the realization that motivating students, our primary target audience, to attend the speaking event would be incredibly difficult and rather impossible seeing as most students don't even go to the school team's basketball games.

The Plan 2.0:
To make our Leadership Impact Project more manageable and effective in being able to reach our target audience, we decided to take a more public route. Instead of attracting a guest speaker, we decided that we would create informational posters to post around the school to communicate our information to our peers.

The Plan 3.0:
After our first peer-review session in which our classmates critiqued our first action plan, we came to the conclusion that we needed to be a little more ambitious with our planning. In addition to the flyers, we would also create a large-scale poster to hang somewhere around the school, and create a facebook group to encourage our peers to pay attention to our message. With this plan we would reach our target audience more effectively.

Success Criteria:
Determining the success of this project, we discovered, would be the most difficult part of this whole process. How would we really know if our campaign had made a difference? To answer this question we will make a survey asking students if they had seen our efforts and then to judge whether they had at all been impacted by them. We hope to have a 75% success rate out of those surveyed.

Glenwood Book Donation

Our group, consisting of Nicole R, Brad M, Maria N, Jessica R, and Jordan S, are wanting to make a difference by donating gently used books to Glenwood Elementary School and help expand their lacking library. At first, we weren't sure how successful we would be in collecting books. We had an original goal of donating 40 books; anything was better than nothing. Sooner than we realized, our donations came flooding in from local public libraries and elementary schools, and we currently are holding 352 books in good condition to donate to Glenwood's library. This was our challenge plan we have organized to help us through the process:
