Limewire law

Is limewire legal or ILLEGAL?

Limewire is a program that you are able to share files over the internet, to actually play them on your computer. File-sharing however is ILLEGAL, so for that matter limewire is too.

Limewire is a huge problem to the music industry because with limewire you can get almost every song in the world. Who needs albums and other expensive cd's when you can download music fast and easy, and then transfer it on ur iPod all for free.

http://news.cnet.com/RIAA-settles-with-12-year-old-girl/2100-1027_3-5073717.html

In New York 2003, a 12 year old girl was caught sharing files off limewire. She was going to be charged a lot of money for the amount of music that was tranfered from peer-to-peer. They dropped the charge to being only $2000 and dropped the case.

I think that this law is stupid because no matter what people are still going to use it, police can't go around to every single house that has it and arrest them. For one thing it is easy to just uninstall the program, and it would be a waste of time for the cop. Also if the person is caught the charge is way to high, a 12 year old girl being charged $2000! That's crazy. I think this law should be dropped, the only thing is that the music industry would just fall.

yo but don't you agree that the music industry already faces illegal downloading? They are doing just fine. If we get rid of the law it will not change a thing. People will still buy cd's or buy the songs off Itunes.

Personally, I think it's stupid that there are all these laws making such programs illegal. Either way, people will continue to download music illegally and like you wrote, the police can't possibly go door to door to catch people. A simple law won't stop people from illegally downloading music so it just seems useless to continue trying.

Allan, you can't just uninstall a program and have it removed from your computer.

Do you really think that when the police arrest people with criminal data on their computer, they just leave it in a folder on the desktop? No, they delete it thinking the same thing you did.

However, you really can never erase something from your hardrive. Only special programs can be used to overwrite individual lines of code with all zeroes can be used to do this.

Besides, once a police officer has a warrant to take your computer, there is nothing you can do to stop them short of trying to fight them.

I also agree that there are now all these bad laws.
They just want this law so they could make more money with all the fines.

First off, you may want to do a little more research before you do a blog post. Without these laws, how would illegal downloading be enforced? I'm aware that these laws are not completely affective in terms of enforecement; however, by downloading music, you're taking away the rights the ARTIST has to its song. When you illegally download, you hurt the recording industry as well. If illegal downloading continues and and the recording industry suffers extreme financial loss, album production will eventually stop. The person being charged $2000 is charged for a fine, a fine protecting copyright laws. My opinion is that you quit complaining about how unfair the laws against illegal downloading are and start using LEGAL file-sharing software such as the paid version of Limewire.

Damn, Aaron just worked you. I agree with him, he's exatly right in what he said. Also, clearly these laws are not working if I am able to go home and download this program with ease. You definately should rethink things and be more informed next time you post. Either way, I download from Limewire and I'm not doing anything illegal in doing so. I'll leave it up to you to figure out how that is.

Yeah Limewire shouldn't be illegal because I believe artists make plenty of money through concerts and other merchandise such as t-shirts, dvd's, and others. As far as your blog goes..it needs more effort and time put in it because it's way too brief and you should elaborate why you think it's stupid. You may not know what you're talking about, but I agree fully that no one should be punished for this. People shouldn't waste their money on music because artists are making millions anyways. People who download off illegal programs shouldn't be punished because if the law is taken away, then people will still buy cd's and download of itunes. Even if they're hunting people down, people will STILL DOWNLOAD MUSIC ILLEGALLY!

It is a waste of time to try and enforce laws on something as silly as limewire. Either way, kids and adults will continue to use limewire to download music for free. If they wanted to be fair and honest about downloading music they would use itunes, but they're not. Obviously police cannot seek out every person that is downloading music from limewire and arrest and charge them. People are still buying CD's and many people still use Itunes, and thus far the music business is doing just fine. There is no use in continuing the enforecement of these laws, it is a waste of time and energy.

I think that if limewire, and other programs that let you download music for free are so illegal than these programs should be terminated and deleted. Why would they leave the programs up to download? IT seems like they do this so they could get money from the people they catch. It is beyond ridiculous. Despite all that, people need to stop downloading music illegally. When you do this, you take away money from the artists who these songs belong to. If people keep doing this, all the artists will have no income. Go to the the library people!! They have every cd possible and its all FREE!!!!
